I really don't mean to bitch but I need to get something of my chest. The Dutch translations on livejournal are often abominable. Often the 'best' translation is used just for the sake of the translation, which makes it very very difficult to digest oftentimes. For example: the term 'site map' doesn't need to be translated, it makes perfect sense to just leave the English phrase. Also I'd change 'dagboek' into 'journal' because everyone I know talks about his journal and not his 'dagboek' which is a diary, a little book, not a webbased journal.

Anyway my question is: is there any sort of control on the translations made?
Apart from just bitch I would gladly offer assistance. yahoo: screamingatsilence

No real control is done no. Often, it is hard to find a word, so once a suitable word is found, it is used. Some discussion on the best word sometimes results in a decision, mostly because we all get convinced that one word is the best. If you can offer any better ideas, please feel free to do so here!

As for using journal to translate journal, well, journal is not a dutch word I think. My dictionary says: "journal: journaal (boekhouden); dagboek; dagblad; tijdschrift 2 tap (v. machine)" so I think dagboek is a good translation, even in the context of this site.

Site map is hard to translate, but again I would argue that "map" in dutch means "opbergmap", and not kaart.

(waarom typ ik dit eigenlijk allemaal in 't engels? Gewoonte I guess...)

Om mee te helpen: ik veronderstel dat chemical je wel zal contacteren, zij is degene die je vertaaltoegang kan geven...

My point is (I'll keep this in English) that in normal everyday Dutch, English phrases are used, especially amongst young people. To translate every word just because it needs to be translated doesn't make any sense. It ruins the flow and it makes it harder to understand which isn't necessary. Sometimes it's better to come up with a translation that isn't litteral but does make sense in every day spoken language.
Anyway I wasn't solliciting for a translation job, I just wanted to make this point. If you all feel the need to translate everything litterally than that is fine by me.
To end on a happy note: some translations are excellent. I've read a few in other sections and they do make sense.

Controleer spelling bij voorbeeld (op dit moment altijd met Engels woordenboek)
Let op! De gebruiker heeft de optie ingeschakeld dat je IP adres bijhoudt wanneer je een bericht achterlaat.

(I just noticed this underneath the reply box. I think it proves my point, this isn't Dutch it's jibberish).

I agree with
[Error: Irreparable invalid markup ('<lj-user="yourhigness">') in entry. Owner must fix manually. Raw contents below.]

I agree with <lj-user="yourhigness">. It looks like someone just grabbed a dictionary and translated each English word literally into the Dutch word.

I'd also like to help you translate. I'm a Dutch native speaker and I used to be in a bi-lingual school. So, if you need someone: tell me what to do, I'll translate it for you. My e-mailaddress is regenelfje@hotmail.com.

Not a Dutch speaker, not natively. Picking it up slowly though. Am from America.. And read something about how some of them were translated, into ones that didn't make sense. I don't even speak that much, yet when I read it. Some things that were translated, really should have been left in English.. Nothing wrong with the language.. Except that it is a little screwed..
